Komodo National Park, between Sumbawa and Flores, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most exciting places to dive in Asia. Strong tidal currents sweep nutrient-rich water over pinnacles such as Batu Bolong, Castle Rock and Crystal Rock, drawing reef sharks, schooling fish and big pelagics, while Manta Alley and Karang Makassar are famous for manta rays.
The north of the park is warm and clear; the south is colder, greener and rich in macro life. Currents can be powerful, so many sites suit Advanced divers, but sheltered bays give beginners plenty to see too.
Most divers base themselves in Labuan Bajo, on Flores, and either join daily boat trips or a liveaboard. The operators below run day trips, courses and multi-day cruises into the park.
