Bali is one of the most varied dive islands in Asia, and one of the easiest to reach. In a single trip you can swim through the coral-covered USAT Liberty wreck at Tulamben, look for ghost pipefish and the Japanese wreck at Amed, drift past manta rays and, from July to October, oceanic sunfish (mola mola) off Nusa Penida, and dive the Biorock reefs and Menjangan Island walls from Pemuteran.
Water is warm all year, at roughly 24 to 29°C, although Nusa Penida's cold upwellings can drop well below that. Most east-coast sites are shore or short boat dives, which makes Bali a good place to learn, while the stronger currents around the Nusa Islands suit experienced divers.
Dive centres here range from small family-run shops to PADI 5 Star IDC centres and SSI training centres, with Open Water courses, Nitrox, equipment hire and day trips across the island. Use the areas below to find operators in each part of Bali.
