Malaysia's best diving splits between Borneo and the islands off the east coast of the peninsula. In Sabah, Sipadan is one of the most famous dive sites in the world, with barracuda tornadoes, turtles and sharks, and the neighbouring islands of Mabul and Kapalai add superb macro diving.
On the peninsula, Tioman and the Perhentian Islands are protected marine parks with warm water, gentle conditions and good-value courses, and both are easy to reach from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Their season runs from roughly March to October, outside the northeast monsoon.
